Pedagogy and Learning Outcomes

TechGirl Uganda emphasizes collaborative learning environments where girls work together on projects and share experiences, fostering a sense of empowerment and community. Pedagogical methods are tailored to address potential barriers girls face in STEM fields, such as stereotype threat or imposter syndrome, creating a supportive and inclusive learning atmosphere. The curriculum focuses on real-world applications of digital skills, connecting learning to relevant issues and challenges faced by girls in their communities.

TechBoy Uganda employs hands-on, practical learning experiences that appeal to boys’ preferences for active engagement and experimentation. Pedagogical approaches include elements of competition or gamification to motivate boys and maintain their interest throughout the learning process. Instructional methods prioritize problem-solving activities and projects that allow boys to apply their digital skills in meaningful ways.

Evaluation of effectiveness involves assessing learning outcomes, including participants’ proficiency in basic digital skills such as computer literacy, internet navigation, and software usage. Retention and application of skills in real-world contexts are also evaluated, along with changes in participants’ self-efficacy, confidence in using technology effectively, and perceptions of STEM fields as viable career paths. Evidence of increased agency and leadership among participants, as well as examination of participation rates and learning experiences to identify and address gender disparities, are also part of the evaluation process.
