Digital Divide: Bridging the Technology Gap in Rural Uganda
We recently conducted a survey targeting the youth who are the main pillars of societal transformation and we found that in Kassanda district only 10% (numbers over total studied) had access to smart phones which are the main sources of modern computer applications. Of these < 17% could access information with the help of working smart phone (Novus Terra Information). Further document review indicated that the Eastern region had < 10% Internet users and access to smart phones. This leaves approximately a 90% gap of individuals without smart phones and unlikely to use Internet.
In the modern setting where most services such as contact tracing, risk assessment, health promotion, telehealth, on-line business and case reporting are shifting towards information technology. It’s mandatory to increase awareness on ICT use through establishing ICT support hubs in rural areas to leverage Novus Terra Digital Hub experience to bridge the gap and help the less happy people have access.
In our journey to be part of the dream come true, we intend to contribute to increased access to information and communication technology services in the areas in Maddu, Mityana, Mubende, Kassanda plus the greater Masaka regions to compliment line ministerial operations.
Our actions are consistent and aligned with the establishment of computer training programs using a ‘train the trainers’ model in each sub-county, which can be deployed for community support. We have piloted and prototyped a range of products under The Novus Terra Digital Hub, including graphic design, web design, veterinary, cultural and agricultural support programs, financial systems, business programs, and online communication platforms, among others.
Our digital hub themes:
- Digital education platforms.
- Collaborative tools for on-line engagement and meetings.
- Secure information access.
- On-line business management tools.
This is why we exist; to bridge the gap between the computer literate and the illiterate!
